SUMMARY:The Jungfernhof Concentration Camp Memorial Project: Reclaiming a Lost History
DESCRIPTION:Karen Frostig is the Founding Director of the Locker of Memory project\, dedicated to recovering the history and memory of Latvia’s first Nazi concentration camp. The Jungfernhof Concentration Camp\, established in December 1941\, was neglected for 80 years. 3985 German and Austrian Jews were deported\, tortured\, and ultimately murdered at the camp or in nearby forests. 149 victims survived. In 2017\, the Latvian authorities converted this abandoned site into a bucolic public recreation park. \nThe project website contains five years of research produced by a team of historians\, scientists\, technologists\, and graphic artists.  In 2025\, Karen was commissioned by Latvia’s Jewish community to become the first descendant to create the concept and design for a new Holocaust memorial in Latvia. Please join a panel of four experts representing three disciplines–history\, science\, art–for a stimulating discussion about memorialization\, as we enter a new era of international instability and conflict. \nOnline panel presentation\, February 22nd 1:00-2:30\, sponsored by Temple Israel of Boston.
