The simple act of making art is and always has been a vital form of creative rebellion. Subject matter may address any theme that is important to you—saving democracy\, first amendment\, voting rights\, diversity\, healthcare\, bodily autonomy\, LGBTQ+ issues\, women’s rights\, immigration\, environmental concerns\, anti-war\, and more. We encourage a wide range of thoughtful artistic expression. \nBring us work that is unapologetic\, raw\, beautifully dangerous\, truthful\, spontaneous\, funny\, angry\, mysterious\, insightful\, therapeutic\, or impossible to categorize. SUMMARY:Dimension: A Love Letter to Collage & Assemblage
DESCRIPTION:Assemblage art pioneer and activist Betye Saar said\, “I am intrigued with combining the remnant of memories\, fragments of relics and ordinary objects\, with the components of technology. It’s a way of delving into the past and reaching into the future simultaneously. The art itself becomes the bridge.” In that spirit\, the Women’s Caucus for Art of Greater Washington\, DC (WCADC) invites all women and non-binary artists to create a visual ode\, exploring the innate beauty of repurposed materials and/or found objects to express our relationship with time. \nArtists can share artwork focused on paintings\, collage\, assemblage\, mixed media\, and 3-D sculpture to express our relationship with time—past\, present\, and future. \nArtists may submit 1\, 2\, or 3 pieces for consideration. Artwork does not need to incorporate recycled materials to be considered. Entry in this call does not guarantee inclusion in the exhibition. The jurors will determine the final selections. SUMMARY:Zoom In: Who Are We?
DESCRIPTION:Video conferencing software has fundamentally changed how we work and socialize. The technology connects us to new ideas and empowers us to create across boundaries. However\, it also exposes us as isolated individuals and forces us to acknowledge the limitations of our humanity. Though experiences and opinions regarding virtual communication vary\, it is undoubtedly an integral part of modern culture that will continue to shape our lives and how we relate to one another. \nAs we face rapid technological change\, it can be easy to forget that modern challenges can be met with non-technical solutions. Technology’s lens masks the full spectrum of human possibility\, much like a background filter masks the depth of a person’s environment. How does a technical lens limit our understanding? What happens when we interrogate the 16:9 boxes we have created? If we could contact the past\, using our favorite videoconferencing software\, what could our forebears tell us about the path ahead? What can we learn from zooming in on their surroundings? \nMembers of the Women’s Caucus for Art are invited to answer these questions in a special initiative to educate the public about prominent figures within our organization. Select artists will create “Zoom style” 16:9 portraits that reflect the personalities and accomplishments of Lifetime Achievement Award honorees. Each member will be assigned a name at random and provided with WCA resources to develop a research-based portrait of their historical figure.
