There is still a fair amount of the American population as a whole that uses traditional healing or alternative healing for their healthcare. Additionally, Black women have formed several maternal health care databases to assist patients looking to have a culturally informed experience. Organizations such as Sister Midwife Productions and MamaGlow provide resources and information centered on the Black Maternal experience.
Dr. LaNail Plummer is the CEO and founder of Onyx Therapy Group, a Black Woman, Veteran-Owned practice with a 30-member team, serving and empowering many of those who stem from and have experience with marginalization within their community and mental health issues themselves. According to the Onyx Therapy Group website, Plummer and her team employ various theoretical orientations and therapeutic interventions to achieve primary outcomes such as awareness, empowerment, grounding, and growth. Plummer is a highly decorated clinician with over twenty years of experience in the mental health field, educating individuals, communities, and organizations in transformational healing. No matter what the issue is at the root, her desire is to bring people into an uncompromised version of themselves.

July is disability awareness month and I wanted to remember the artist Judith Scott for her ability to transmute the negative experiences in her life into bright and imaginitive creations. Scott was an internationally renowned American fiber sculptor born with Down Syndrome.

As I continue to delve into the themes of motherhood, relationships, loss, and second chances, I became intrigued by Alice Neel’s story. Her experiences resonate with the struggle faced by daughters of women who feel confined by their circumstances. As women, we often emulate what we saw our mothers do or strive for the independence they were unable to attain. Ironically, even if we succeed in breaking free from financial constraints, we may still struggle with unspoken emotions of grief and loss.

Celebrating Mother’s Day can mean different things to different people. If you’ve never been a mother, if you’ve lost your mother, or you’re reparenting yourself, or if you’re not close with your mother at all — you may have mixed emotions about how to celebrate it. But what if that’s not your story? A few days before the holiday, I sat around my dining room table with some friends, and we were immersed in the topic of mother-daughter relationships, and it wasn’t all good. for a young woman facing incarceration who has never been mothered herself, where can she turn for help? Is incarceration the only answer?
