WAGE ON! Women, Art and Money

A Women’s Caucus for Art Exhibition Project Jan 31–Feb25, 2017 | Ceres Gallery, NY
WAGE ON! Women, Art, and Money is the featured national exhibition of the 2017 WCA national conference in New York City. It offers a timely opportunity to address the impact of a changing political and economic landscape through the multi-generational lens of the twenty artists in the exhibition.

As juror Helga Christoffersen remarked:

“I looked to works that took on issues of woman’s work, rights, and identity today, in ways that speak to fundamental underlying issues in our society that affect us all…This exhibition is an important initiative and an example of a way to bring together a broad range of voices, opinions, and practices under a united and urgent cause.”

The exhibition continues themes set by the Minnesota WCA Chapter in their expansive 2016 “The Women and Money Project” and collaboration with Nash Gallery at the University of Minnesota. A full-color catalog will extend the historical and geographical reach of the exhibition and be available in February 2017.

IMPACT!

This exhibition honors the achievements and legacy of all 194 women in the visual arts who received WCA Lifetime Achievement awards between 1979 and 2016, as documented in the honor catalogs. The awardees are introduced here in order of their award year.

The 2016 WCA Conference in Washington, DC culminated with a rousing reception at our exhibition Impact! on the entire second floor of the American University Museum gallery. The legacy of WCA was understood and appreciated by those who saw the examples of powerful work by over thirty artists. Scrolling slides recognizing all 194 women honored since the first awards were presented at the White House in 1979 represented the full range and significance of the honor awards.

The exhibition was co-organized by former WCA board members Jaimianne Amicucci and Barbara Wolanin with the support of the WCA board, the museum, and the lenders.

Who’s Afraid of Feminism

A.I.R. Gallery and the Women’s Caucus for Art announce WHO’S AFRAID OF FEMINISM, curated by Catherine Morris, Sackler Family Curator of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, and managed by Karen Gutfreund, Exhibition Director. This exhibition presents art from cross-generational, self-identified women artists that addresses feminism with a contemporary spin. These works incite the viewer to question the current social and political landscape, and the continuing need for gender equality. The exhibiting artists, using a variety of media, elucidate where feminism has been and where it is going, and explore feminism’s political, personal and formal contexts. With a surge of interest about the place of women in the art market and art world, with a record number of discussions throughout social media channels, WHO’S AFRAID OF FEMINISM highlights what still needs to be done to influence cultural attitudes and transform stereotypes about women in the arts.

“Trending: Contemporary Art Now!” juried by Elizabeth Garvey, co-founder and owner of Garvey Simon Art Access and and managed by Karen Gutfreund, Exhibition Director. Garvey chose 19 works by 12 artists for the Target Gallery at the Torpedo Factory and 101 works by 52 artists for the online gallery and catalog. The show ran from January 23–February 28, 2016. Views from the Edge: Women, Gender and Politics

Curatorial award for Women’s History Month at the Sarah Doyle Gallery at Brown University in Providence, RI. Karen Gutfreund chose 24 women artists for this exhibition “Views from the Edge: Women, Gender and Politics”. The exhibition ran from March 2–28, 2015. This feminist exhibition features the art of 24 women artists raising their voices to advocate for gender equality, women’s rights, and social justice. Works in all media range from the poetic to the psychological, from the personal to the political, and from representational to the abstract. These expressions provoke, dramatize, and challenge assumptions about women’s lives in today’s global society. How is women’s identity defined, controlled, and supported when it comes to politics, reproductive rights, and self-expression? Why is violence against women so common? Why are women’s lives so difficult even now in the 21st. century? This show asks the viewer to look critically at the boundaries and barriers to women’s rights, to celebrate the wonderful differences that women make in both personal and public domains, and to join the fight to achieve the equality that women deserve.

Director: Karen Gutfreund We asked for artwork that examines and explores the social, political and economic issues related to women’s activism. Historically, women have played a central role in the struggle for Civil Rights, yet their voices and experiences are generally ignored. We proposed an exhibition as a means of visually interpreting the struggle for women’s rights. By promoting and striving for protection and actualization of women’s rights, we are paving a path for a stronger and fuller civil and personal life, empowering ourselves and those who follow us. Our jurors chose 94 artists with 108 works to be exhibited at the museum.

With our prospectus for Petroleum Paradox: For Better or For Worse, we asked for works that stir emotions, discussion and debate about our petroleum-dependent world. Examples include, but were not limited to, works that address the impact of collecting, processing and delivering fossil fuel on the environment; global warming; the power of big oil companies to control countries and governments; an imagined life without fossil fuel; and life forms that were the origins of fossil fuel. This exhibition manifests the artists response to the Petroleum Paradox and what is happening in our oil dependent society and world. Eleanor Heartney chose 72 artists for Petroleum Paradox with 31 works in the gallery and an additional 43 featured in the catalog.  The entire show traveled to the Narrows Art Center, Fall River, MA from April 06, 2013 – May 18, 2013.

“Man as Object: Reversing the Gaze” at SOMArts Cultural Center, San Francisco from November 4 to November 30, 2011 with Tanya Augsburg, Associate Professor SFSU as juror. National Juried Exhibition presented at SOMArts Cultural Center, San Francisco from November 4 to November 30, 2011. Priscilla Otani and I received the SOMArts Commons Curatorial Residency. This exhibition re-envisions gender, society and the politics of exposure. With a gallery filled with men stripped naked, this body of work exposes women’s cheeky, provocative and sometimes shocking commentaries on the opposite sex. The exhibition’s contemporary scope encompasses all the ways that women view Man-as-Object, reversing the traditional view of male artists objectifying women. Its diverse perspectives on masculinity come from straight, transsexual, transgender, lesbian and multi-cultural artists through a spectrum of media, from paintings to sculpture, installations to performance, video to social media. Artists were invited to explore their idea of their Hidden City, real or imagined, in an array of media, with the theme broadly interpreted from an activist, political or personal context. No matter our place in society, we all have our Hidden City, a place of refuge from gender, race, class and sexual exclusions, a place that shapes the feminist viewpoint. Some cities, like wrapped boxes, conceal unexpected gifts, others are riddles and lyrical abstractions. These are performative spaces where we may imagine retribution for injustices, righting wrongs or conversely, delving into the dark side. WCA Minnesota Chapter and National WCA presented Women + Water Rights: Rivers of Regeneration at the Katherine E. Nash Gallery at the University of Minnesota.

The exhibition and related programs built awareness, provoked action, and posed solutions for the need to understand water as a universal human right.
