Lost My Husband/Can’t Lose My Country
Solo Exhibition of Susan Grabel’s recent cast paper sculptures and mixed media installations. After the death of her husband of fifty-four years in May 2024, the artist’s work underwent a profound transformation: the cast paper and molded cardboard portraits shown in Reflections, her previous solo exhibition, became meditations on loss and grief, with faces that hide, fragment, protrude, or recede to express the instability of mourning.
This personal reckoning intertwines with her anger and anguish over what she perceives as an ongoing assault on the nation’s institutions and Constitution by the current administration, leading her to incorporate Photoshop collages, flyers, and imagery from public protest into layered backdrops that place private sorrow within a broader landscape of national fracture, where individual grief and collective unrest converge.
